Just 28 miles from downtown Lancaster is Hershey, Pennsylvania, home to Hershey’s Chocolate and many local attractions that also bear the name Hershey.
Milton Hershey was born on September 1857. After a couple failed business attempts, he finally achieved success with his Lancaster Caramel Company, and shipped his caramels around the country.
When he learned about chocolate making, he started the Hershey Chocolate Company. In 1900 Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million, an amazing price at that time. He then built a new factory for his chocolate company in the small community of Derry Church, which later became known as Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Milton Hershey was also a philanthropist, building a school, parks, housing, churches, and recreational facilities for the community. Much of what he established is still in operation today.
Hershey, PA has also become a popular vacation destination in its own right.
