Most brides speak of rain with dread, terrified that rain will ruin their wedding day. They usually have rain contingencies and all kinds of plans to save the day if it rains. Have you heard of a “rain date?”? It’s when people cancel plans because it’s raining, and they reschedule because they don’t want their plans to be ruined by the rain.
You may be able to get a “rain date” for your engagement session, but when it comes to the wedding- you have all your vendors booked, and all your family in town, and you’re not going to get a rain date for your wedding.
Well, I love when it rains on a wedding day. Everyone tries to avoid rainy photos, and so if you have rainy photos, your photos are going to be really unique, simply because everyone tries to plan around the rain instead of embracing it!
Rain is a stunning, cinematic element to have in your wedding photos and video! Sure, it’s inconvenient, but it’s a very romantic thing!
Here are a few reasons why rain is a reason to celebrate instead of cry
- Overcast skies are very dramatic and powerful in photo & video especially photography.
- Sun makes you squint, but overcast skies don’t, because the sun is hidden.
- Rainy days give skin a healthy flush and a glowing skin tone. if you get a little shiny, blot yourself off, and worst-case scenario, here at Fern & Fountain, that’s a simple skin-retouching correctional edit. Be sure your photographer handles skin retouching! Not every photographer does that.
- Under-eye shadows aren’t present with overcast skies, and that’s much more attractive than harsh shadows under your nose and in your eye sockets.
- Muted light gives us a lot more freedom in the artistic and special effect areas because very bright days require rather stiff settings to handle the light flooding into the lens. Softer light will allow your photographer to have a lot more artistic freedom.
- Raindrops are romantic!
- Water-covered surfaces are more rich, concentrated, and reflective so the luminance and vibrance factor is very pleasing. Dripping water is a beautiful and romantic asset to photos.
Check out this rainy session in a Solarium several weeks ago! Because of the raindrops and the dramatic sky (and wind!), this turned out 10x more romantic than if it would have been sunny weather!
