Learn About the Amish at the Amish Country Homestead
The Amish Country Homestead has been a Lancaster County visitor landmark for over 50 years. It reflects a commitment to accurately portray the Old Order Amish people as they live and work in the world of today, not as they lived many years ago.
This is not a museum, but instead is furnished as the real home of the Fisher family, whom you may have met in the local production of “Jacob’s Choice” at the Amish Experience Theatre.
Enjoy an educational guided tour through the nine rooms and one-room school that give visitors an inside look at Amish life. The authenticity of the Amish Country Homestead has been recognized by the County of Lancaster by designating it as a “Heritage Site”.
As you tour the Homestead, you learn about Amish traditions and practices, about their plain clothing, and how they still enjoy many modern conveniences without the use of electricity.
From the pantry stocked full of freshly canned vegetables to the family’s plain clothes, propane-powered lamps to air-compressor driven appliances, the Fisher Family Homestead truly provides insights into the complex riddles of a culture so very different than our own.
The Fisher One-Room School is filled with authentic desks and furnishings from an actual Amish school. The tradition of teaching eight grades in one room is certainly fascinating.
