Lititz in the Headlines –

Lititz residents and fans are all excited about the latest news about their favorite town. Lititz has qualified to be one of the 15 finalists for the online contest “America’s Coolest Small Towns 2013”. This contest is hosted annually by BudgetTravel.com. The picture above is of a banner that hangs across Lititz Pike (Route 501) as you enter Lititz from Lancaster.

From the BudgetTravel website:

The people have spoken! After 924 nominations, 96,605 votes, and 2,415 comments–our biggest turnout ever!–we’ve whittled down your list to the 15 coolest of the cool. Check out the finalists below and cast your vote to help choose the 8th Annual Coolest Small Town in America!

People across the country can vote for their local favorite. One vote per day is allowed. Voting ends February 15th, so vote today if you have a favorite (Lititz, of course. Duh!)

By the way, as of this writing Lititz is in first place in the balloting. Watkins Glen, NY is second.  When you vote you’ll see the results for all 15 finalists.

Lititz is the only town from Pennsylvania in the running. The other small town finalists include: Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; Camden, Maine; Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin; Flagler Beach, Florida; Glenwood Springs, Colorado; Greenville, Kentucky; Gulf Shores, Alabama; Le Claire, Iowa; Mount Carroll, Illinois; Put-in-Bay, Ohio; Quincy, California; Shepherdstown, West Virginia; Travelers Rest, South Carolina; and Watkins Glen, New York.

The 2011 winner was Lewisburg, West Virginia. 2012 ended in a tie between Beaufort, North Carolina and Hammondsport, New York.

“American Idol” Meets Small Town America

This “Coolest Small Town in America’ contest is definitely raising loyalty and support for the home town. But it is a bit unscientific in their selection process and in their polling, just like how “American Idol” selects their winners.

Lititz is a ‘cool’ town. It’s a great community with a lot going on all year long: monthly Second Friday events, the Fire and Ice Festival later this month, the annual Fourth of July Celebration, the Art and Craft Shows, and the whole atmosphere of this town. I’m a fan.

But I wonder if this contest is really just a publicity gimmick to generate traffic for the host website and their sponsors. If it is, it seems to be working – thousands of people around the country are going to this website to ‘vote’.
