Now that all of Lancaster County’s busy July 4th festivities have finished, the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open takes center stage in Lancaster. This international golfing event begins Thursday at Lancaster Country Club here in Lancaster. Practice rounds are under way today through Wednesday.

This will be the 70th U.S. Women’s Open, which is the largest and most prestigious event in women’s golf. 156 professional golfers will be competing for this year’s championship. This is thought to be biggest sporting event ever in Lancaster County.

Between 75,000 and 100,000 spectators are expected to attend the tournament this week. New Holland Pike (Route 23) will be closed between Route 30 and Eden Road between 5:00 am and 9:00 pm Monday through Sunday to limit traffic in front of Lancaster Country Club.

The golf course at Lancaster Country Club was originally designed in 1919 by William Flynn. An extensive renovation to the course began in 2007 under the direction of Forse Design. These changes included moving a couple tees on the course, overhauling a few greens, combining some bunkers, and removing over 500 trees.

Over 2,300 volunteers have been recruited to help out during this week-long event.

Practice rounds will take place Monday through Wednesday. Then the competitors will tee off to begin the tournament Thursday morning.

However, keep an eye on the weather. Weather forecasts are calling for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

Television coverage will be broadcast nationally by Fox Sports.

The honorary chairman of this year’s event is Arnold Palmer.
