Call out your name

April 1 - April 1, 2022

$10
At 7pm on Friday April 1, 2022 at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Lancaster, PA, soprano and Lancaster native AddieRose Forstman (née Brown) and composer & pianist Dr. Maria Thompson Corley present “Call out your name”, a program including works by Gilda Lyons, Leonard Bernstein, Maria Thompson Corley, Puccini, Tom Lehrer, Fats Waller, Nina Simone & Kurt Weill.  There is a suggested ticket price of $10, at the door. Per St. Thomas’ current protocols, masks are optional, but suggested, for audience members.
We are constantly breaking free into a truer version of ourselves. Sometimes that is a silent process — sometimes it is explosive. Sometimes, as we shed layer after thin, clinging layer of our past selves, we feel a primal, soulful urge to call our names, our symbol of selfhood, out loud into the world — to the stars, to the void, to a crowded room, to our God…. I believe we must all have these moments, however they are manifested in our individual consciousness.
Many times our ability to muster up the courage this self-proclamation requires is sparked by finding in someone else’s words, or art, a pre-existing expression of what we have longed to say, and not known how to crystalize into distinct thoughts & words.
American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay has often offered that clarity to me, and so her poetry became the seed and core of this program, as set by American composers H. Leslie Adams, Victoria Bond, and Libby Larsen.  These works begin an arc that leads from the recognition of oneself in Nature, through the simultaneous triumph and pain of realizing one’s growth means losing touch with past versions of oneself, and past comforts, to the depression, frustration, or anger at constantly having to release the old and assumed, and fight for the new self to be acknowledged.
With two world premiere songs of Maria Thompson Corley’s, setting poetry of Susanna Musser and AddieRose Forstman, we turn the corner into a moment of relief and celebration.  Because despite all fears or adversity we, as humans, can uncover the strength to be unapologetically ourselves, to hold our course, and to laugh and find joy along the never-ending, twisting, turning, and beautiful road to our fullest, truest self.
We would be honoured for you to join us on this musical exploration.
