Get Reliable Answers to 3 Common Questions About Replacement Windows and Doors

The cold winters and hot, humid summers we experience in Lancaster take a toll on our home’s windows and doors – the cold contracts materials and the heat expands it, which can lead to cracking and warping.

Ultimately, this strain causes your windows and doors to lose their energy-efficient properties over time.

At George J. Grove & Son, we’ve been in the home improvement business a long time – since 1963 to be exact. In that time, we have answered a lot of questions for our customers.

Today, we’re going to answer questions that we are asked often about energy-efficient windows and doors.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your home’s windows or doors (or both), your biggest concern is probably – Is it worth it for me to upgrade? In most cases the answer is yes, especially if your windows are single-pane and are more than 20 years old.

Read on for answers to 3 frequently-asked questions we get about window and door replacement.

Editor’s Note: Here’s a list of more home improvement contractors in Lancaster, PA.

1. Are energy-efficient windows and doors tax deductible?

Windows, doors, and skylights that meet Energy Star standards were eligible for a tax credit in 2017.

While the 2018 federal tax credits for window and door replacement aren’t official yet, we’re expecting Congress to release them soon. It is likely that the 2018 credits will be similar to those from the last several years.

Not all windows and doors in your home need to be replaced to qualify either (eg, replacing only your front entry door would qualify). You’re also able to claim the credit if you installed a new window or door (eg, you built a new addition).

2017 Federal Tax Credit (we expect this to be similar for 2018): 10% percent of the materials cost (up to $200 for windows and skylights and up to $500 for doors).

2. How much do energy-efficient windows and doors cost?

The typical price range is $4,566 – $8,580 for materials and installation. In Lancaster, an average window replacement project costs $6,573. The price range to replace a front entryway door is $943 – $1,290 (with installation). In Lancaster, the average cost to replace a front entry door is $1,077.

Of course, price depends on the products you choose. We like Provia and Sunrise doors and windows for their selection, quality, and value.

Adding windows improves resale value and can be completed in 1 day, as was the case with this project.

3. How much do energy-efficient windows save?

Replacing single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR certified windows or choosing ENERGY STAR replacement windows over the typical clear-glass double-paned alternative can save a significant amount of money on your energy bill.

A home* located in the greater Philadelphia area saves, on average, $294/year (replacing single-pane windows) and $116/year (replacing double-pane). In addition to the energy savings, your home will feel more comfortable year-round.

Check your potential savings here.

*Savings estimates based on an even mix of 1,700 sq. ft one-story and 2,600 sq. ft two-story homes with natural gas heat and electric air conditioning.

Provia and Sunrise Windows & Doors are two companies we trust. We love their products and they both have industry-leading warranties. Their product selection and build-quality are fantastic. If you’re looking for new windows or a door, start with them.
